The mountain pastures of Montreux

COL DE JAMAN

On the heights above the town, the commune of Montreux boasts 15 mountain pastures with chalets built of tavillons. Cheese and charcuterie are produced and sold directly from the mountain pastures. The chalets are owned by the commune, which rents them out to tenants. These tenants look after their herds and produce alpine cheese. Renovations have been supported by the local authority, in particular to replace the shingles damaged by hail.

The Chalet du Revon on the Col de Jaman is one of these mountain chalets. Here, visitors can find out how cheese is made and stored, and can even buy local products such as Jaman Gruyère. The alpine pastures around the chalet are grazed by 55 dairy cows, a bull, 30 heifers and 30 pigs.

La Pacoresse, another alpine chalet on the heights of Montreux, is covered in tavillons. It is therefore listed as a historic monument. You can admire the aesthetics and authenticity of its roof. The use of local wood for construction and renovation also helps to make the building more sustainable. Cows and calves thrive in the pastures close to Chalet de la Pacoresse. As with the other mountain pastures in Montreux, local products such as cheese and charcuterie can be sold directly from La Pacoresse.
