Schafscheid

JAUN

The Schafscheid in Jaun, in the Gruyère region, marks the descent of the sheep from the alpine pastures. Flocks grazing on the mountain pastures often include sheep belonging to several different farmers. Once they have returned to the valley, the sheep are gathered in one place and divided among pens. They are then sorted and returned to their owners.

On the day of the celebration, between 300 and 500 sheep arrive in several flocks, decorated by their shepherds. The event is not only an opportunity to return the sheep to their owners, but also includes a sheep market.
